FINAL INSTALLATION CONCEPTS

i won't lie, i'm already set on a concept, but here are my final 3 "realistic" (as opposed to ideal) concepts:

1. "scattered"
2. "stacked"*

SCATTERED

equipment needed: 5 TVs
5 DVD players

sound omitted

this concept consists of scattering and hiding various monitors throughout the gallery space. while visible, each placement will be slightly 'hidden', giving the viewers a since of discovery, and a personal, intimate experience with each piece. granted, with this scenario, parts of the project will have to be omitted, such as sound, and the loops of 5 videos (each tv will have only a single video on loop, as not to confused 'the discoverers'), but an experience is still being offered to the viewer.

STACKED

equipment needed: 5 TVs
5 DVD players
2 sets of headphones...**

perhaps the simpilest concept, but the one i find the most concise and satisfying. consists of a vertical stack of 13 inch TVs, preferable in a corner, each displaying a loop of 5 videos (each starting with a different video). this way, the whole project is simple, concise, and even raw--there are no distracting frills or over designed concept. it is bare and present--much like the videos themselves.

DRAPED

equipment needed: 1 projector
1 cd player
fabric/wire/hooks

this concept consists of creating a separate partition for the projection of the videos onto a white wall. the curtain will serve both as a light blocker, as well as create an intimate space for viewers. sound will be ambient, not connected to headphones.

MANIFESTO

"The Art of Loving" was first conceptualized at the tumultuous end of a very passionate but tremendously flawed relationship. I had lost my faith in love, in both my understanding and experience of it, and was desperate to find it restored. I began working on an almost entirely instinctual basis, as concepts and images were birthed in ways that even I--the creator--could hardly articulate. But while the project was still in its infancy, something quite significant, and perhaps fateful, occurred: Love reentered my life. The restoration of my trust in love was now working on two fronts, both from the outside and in. The time came to understand the work at my hands, to move the instinctual into the intellectual while preserving its purity. As the pieces developed, I began to see that the aesthetics and concepts chosen to portray each object of love were results of deeply embedded perceptions during times of extreme vulnerability. It is the outside looking into something fragile yet resilient, intimate but sparse. "The Art of Loving" is not merely a set of images, but a set of fundamental, essential, ever-present perceptions of experience, finally being freed from the depths of the internal through a visual medium.

LOVE OF GOD

concepts:

• light v. dark
• empty v. full (also applies to 'light' metaphor)
• personal space & experience v. universal space & experience


granted, these concepts also help shape the other videos, but the "light v. dark" motif serves a particularly significant purpose in the "LOVE OF GOD" video.

I'm also beginning to look into sound options. I went from relatively certain that I was going to stay away from sound for this project, to excitedly persuaded into having sound for the piece, in am matter of one class. I'm inspired to jump into that bit of the project shortly....

THE ART OF LOVING is a 5-part video installation inspired in part by Eric Fromm. Each video is of the 5 objects of love: Brotherly Love, Motherly Love, Self Love, Erotic Love, and Love of God.
